Description

The flag of the United States Virgin Islands is simple, bright and bold. It features a more basic version of the U.S. coat of arms between the blue letters “V” and “I” for Virgin Islands. The golden eagle clasps an olive branch in one talon and three arrows in the other. At the heart of the eagle lies a red, white and blue American shield.

Meaning

The arrows are representative of the territory’s three major islands: Saint Thomas, Saint John and Saint Croix. The colors of the flag also hold unique meanings with the yellow eagle signifying the terrain and flowers, while the green olive branch stands for the hills. The white background is symbolic of purity, the blue represents the water surrounding the islands, and red means love.

History

Rear Admiral Summer Ely Whitmore Kitelle, who was appointed governor of the territory in 1921, discussed the making of this flag with Percival Wilson Sparks, a cartoonist. Sparks drew the concept on paper then had it transferred to heavy cotton. After, Sparks had his wife, Grace, and her sister stitch the layout he designed that same year.
